The United States of America. The Land of Opportunity, The Land of Dreams. But in today’s America, dreams have rules. One of the main rules for College Football Players is: If you are a rare talent and you want everything to go smoothly, the NCAA and your University have to make money off of you for 3 years before you start seeing checks written directly to you from the NFL.
Which leads us to Jadeveon Clowney, who has recently been tabbed by NFL analyst as a #1 overall NFL Draft talent. However, Jadeveon is only a true sophomore. He has yet to fulfill his amateur agreement with the NCAA and the University of South Carolina. Regardless of how in “awe” the NFL is over this young specimen. All parties involved will have to wait!
Ironically in the land of the “bootstrap-per”, this young man cannot quite cash in on his talent and hard work yet. But young Jadeveon does have a legitimate gripe. “If I have become the hottest commodity in College Football in only two years, do I really need to play 3 years?” Why risk injury?
What if Jadeveon set a precedent and decided to forgo his junior season and train all year for the 2014 NFL Draft? It’s technically not illegal, and the film speaks for itself. NFL teams are salivating to get their hands on this young man. But everyone knows, when your at the top there is only one place to go.
Right?
Here is the Before You Go Pro take: Jadeveon has a legitimate dilemma on his hands. However, he is a few years ahead of his time. The rules are currently against him. And Yes! He can challenge the system. But trust me, the NFL and NCAA are in bed together, so I doubt you really want to go that route.
Once again, Three years in College is the mandatory sentence for Jadeveon Clowney. So it is a fact that the masses will gather in Columbia, South Carolina, to marvel at the football talent of Mr. Clowney in the fall. It is also a fact that a pretty penny will be made off of the ticket sales from every seat sold in the University of South Carolina’s 80,000 seat stadium. And the largest fact of all, is that Jadeveon Clowney will not see one red cent of the revenue earned due to people coming to see him perform in 2013. Not to mention jersey sales! But hey! If it really bothers Jadeveon Clowney that he will have to wait a year to start cashing his big checks, he can always choose to just sit out……
