Friends and Teammates:

Many athletes who find themselves in unfavorable situations aren’t alone. Especially when it comes to the mistakes that take place off-campus.

Remember. The best way for an athlete to decrease the odds of making off-the-field mistakes, is by hanging out with the guys who never make them!

Impulsive Behavior

Controlling impulses is not easy. It’s typical to see high-octane athletes living fast lifestyles. Not to mention, people tend to be the most impulsive during their teens and early 20’s. Which happens to be the prime years for highly competitive athletes in our country.

This creates a recipe for disaster!

One of the best things an athlete can do to control impulses is be honest with themself. If you are a person who tends to make impulsive mistakes or have thoughts that aren’t in line with your goals. Seek support. It’s time to learn the skills necessary to curb your impulses and slow things down.

Entitlement:

Let’s be honest. Great athletes are highly catered to. Whether it’s a high schooler, who receives undeserved grades in class. Or the professional athlete, who becomes accustomed to VIP treatment at every restaurant, hotel and night club they attend. It’s easy to develop a strong sense of entitlement as an athlete.

However, entitlement is the gateway to mistreating people, sabotaging people’s perception of you and abusing their trust. Remember. Everything that is given to you can be taken away.

Try your best to adopt a mindset of gratitude, so you can stay away from feelings of entitlement.

Past Baggage:

Scars that haven’t healed tend to show up at the worst time. This is no different for athletes. Anger issues, drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence, are just a few of the self-sabotaging pitfalls that have tripped-up athletes for years.

Family history and the environment we grow up in, can play a huge role in some of the behavior that people have to fight through. It’s important to realize that you’re not alone in the fight. Someone has already overcome what you are going through. There are resources to help you throw away the past baggage that is weighing you down.

Self-Doubt:

When we doubt ourselves, we tend to indulge in activities and thoughts that are counter-productive to what we really want to accomplish.

Doubt produces fear. Which can paralyze you and cause you to self-destruct. Trust that you are worthy of the goals you are currently chasing. Work on your mind as hard as you work on your body. Doubt is no longer an option.
