The Great Debate: by Alexis McClain

Now that I have your full attention….let me start by saying, my goal here is not to get into a political/ethical/philosophical debate…but to teach you how to handle one should it arise!

The NFL/Jay-Z partnership recently consumed the news and set off a series of arguments and debates. Many of which, lacked skill, thoughtfulness, and understanding.

This got me to think… How can I make this social talking point pertain to you?

Well, you will have to debate/negotiate all the time when you get to college. That’s a fact. Perhaps you have already had to debate/negotiate in your day to day life.  Always Remember. Opinions, yelling, name calling, rudeness and complete disregard for those you are speaking with, will get you shut down in a debate or negotiation immediately.

Here are some keys to debating that will help you throughout school, and on all levels of life.

  1. Keep Calm – Once the yelling starts…conversation is over! Being heard does not equal being louder.
  2. Work off Your Emotions– know what your triggers are….THIS IS HUGE.  You have to sit down with yourself and take note of what you know for a fact will trigger you and work through that…it is easier said than done admittedly but it is vital! A hot head and temper could effect you adversely in many ways. Remember. Avoiding these triggers does not help. Leaning into them and learning from them does.
  3. Speak Clearly and Concise – Make sure that people can hear you and understand you. More doesn’t mean better.  Get to the point and be clear on where you stand.
  4. Know the Topic – Fake news is not cool. Facts are more imperative now than ever before. Knowing and understanding what your argument is will help your thoughts flow freely. However, also knowing the opposing arguments can serve you well.  A great defense knows where it is weak. Just like you study film of teams you play against. You should also study arguments against things that you may stand for or end up debating. Whether you agree or not, there is ALWAYS two sides to any story or argument.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH FOOTBALL?

-Playing time

-Job interviews

-Grades/Talking with coaches, teachers, and professors

-Talking to peers

-Advocating for a Scholarship

-Possible NFL contracts

-Possible Endorsements

Get the point?

All of the topics above you will debate or negotiate in the future.  You will be debating or negotiating throughout your life…. You need to have the skills, and you need them early so you can effectively advocate for yourself, or on behalf of others.

Go out there; research your opinions and thoughts on The NFL/Jay-Z partnership and the opposing view…Really put thought into it and let us know what you think. Remember the key points from this blog post. We look forward to hearing your arguments and opinions soon!
