1. Stop the Background Noise

If you are fortunate enough to have College Football Coach calling to offer you a scholarship. You have just hit the lottery. No one calling to offer you a lottery ticket wants to compete with background noise. Remember. You’re always being evaluated in the football industry. It’s essential to get off on the right foot. If a College Football Recruiter calls you, make sure you get in an area where there is no background noise if possible.

If it’s not possible to get in a quiet area. Make sure you acknowledge the background noise and apologize to the coach you are on the phone with. They will respect you for the fact that you realize the situation isn’t idea. When money is the line. Make sure the person on the other end of the line knows you respect the situation.

2. No Money for the Mumbler

College Coaches put a premium on Confidence. Once again, you’re being evaluated. During conversations with College Football Recruiters make sure you speak up and annunciate. You can earn or lose a football scholarship based off of a phone conversation or a Zoom Call. College Recruiters don’t have money for someone that is mumbling or has low energy. Make sure the coach on the phone or Zoom Call can hear you clearly to confirm you are the right student-athlete for his football program.

3. Cordial and Open

The Football Industry is a “Good-Ole-Boy Industry.” Which means that everyone knows each other. Not to mention, College coaches move from school to school as if they were elementary school kids playing musical chairs (Obviously Pre Covid-19).

Bottom line. Expect to cross paths with coaches who recruit you many times during your football career. You may be telling them NO today but find yourself in their position room on another team down the road. Always be respectful and keep things cordial.

Remember. If you don’t have any scholarship options in your back pocket, don’t turn down anything. Always keep your options open until a better opportunity comes. Make sure the scholarship you turn down today, isn’t the one you’re fighting to get back later down-the-road.

4. Yes Sir/No Sir

Respect is everything in Football. If a College Recruiter feels you don’t respect him over the phone. Why should he bring you on his multi-million dollar College Campus?

There are too many student-athletes waiting by the phone for a College opportunity, to waste time with someone who doesn’t have College student-athlete etiquette.

When you are on the phone with a College Football Recruiter, it is a “Yes Sir, No Sir” occasion. It’s an opportunity to prove that you are the one worthy of the BAG. Perception is everything. Close the deal. If you are personable and respectful on-the-phone, it will go a long way towards making sure you are the obvious choice for the scholarship offer.
